Allan and I are heading to Canada tomorrow for the OTTAWA INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL! Opening night we'll be watching the Persepolis film, I can't wait.

Preying Mantis

Praying Mantis' don't think much of weddings.

Storm King

Yesterday Allan and I drove up to the Storm King art center. It was our second visit so we found some time to sketch. I did this little 4"x6" watercolor study from a bench on top of a sculpture field. I was always a cold press paper person, but I'm liking this little pad of hot press.

Tek Jansen

If you check out the Colbert Report tonight on Comedy Central at 11:30, you may just catch the first episode of Tek Jansen's second season of animated adventures. The second season is animated at Flickerlab in New York, and I was brought on last minute to help with some cleanup and lip synch. There's some quality drawing even though it was a tight budget, mostly due to fellow SVA grad Simon Ampel and Phil Lockerby. There's also some sweet backgrounds by Max Porter and Bryan Cox. It may also be online in the coming days, and there will be a number of new episodes in the coming months to watch out for.

I watched Nacho Libre the other day and suddenly found myself sketching lots of luchadors!

Coney Island

Allan and I spent yesterday afternoon at Coney Island. I didn't really sketch, but I took a load of photos. Hope Astroland will still be around next season.

Worldwide Sketchcrawl #15 is Tomorrow

Just a reminder to New Yorkers that we'll be meeting for Sketchcrawl on Saturday August 25th at Pier 17 (Fulton & South Streets) of the South Street Seaport at 11 am at the big boat in the harbor.

Subway directions: 2, 3, 4, 5, J, Z, or M to Fulton Street A or C trains to Broadway-Nassau;
or E train towards Fulton Street. Walk East on Fulton Street to Water Street.

We may head over to the Museum of the Native American at some point later in the day for some air conditioning.

Looks like it'll be a hot one, bring plenty of water and sunscreen!

Peter Pan color/ layout studies

I've been doing a bunch of color key studies in marker based on design work by Mary Blair. The top sketch is about 5.5"x 6" and the bottom one is 3"x 4" (about actual size here.) They were done on the same page, but I posted them separately as they weren't facing the same way. I had a lot of fun sketching these up quickly and I'll post the rest in the next couple of days.

apartment sketches

If you're in the NYC area, there's a book release party this Monday August 6 for the Friends of Lulu comic anthology "The Girls' Guide to Guys' Stuff." It's a pretty amazing collection of work from female cartoonists (including me!) It starts at 7 at the Museum of Comic & Cartoon Art at 594 Broadway, Suite 401.

Tonks

Oh Harry Potter. I was irked by Tonks' appearance in the Order of the Phoenix movie, why didn't she have her pink spiked hair, eh? Anyway, I finished the final book the other day and sketched this up.

I picked up a copy of Leon (The Professional) last week and did some sketches after watching it.

It was a lovely day and Allan and I did some sketching in Central Park this afternoon.

I did this in my mini moleskine on the LIRR one evening. The top is the Manhattan skyline after coming out of the tunnel, middle is the platform at Shea Stadium and the bottom is the platform at Murray Hill.
