Birthdays

So this blog is 4 years old! I started it in 2006 out of creative frustration at my job at the time. At this point I've made 350 entries! Thanks so much to everyone who follows along, I love hearing your feedback.

Here's a drawing I did in sketchbook pro of Little Red Riding Hoodie.

Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day, the Kentucky Derby and My Birthday, all of which I fully endorse. :)

Drawings from April 1

I was really happy with my drawing this night.

Although by the end I usually get frustrated and doodle in the margins. Some habits never die.

Drink 'N Draw

This is the third one I've gone to. No drinking, just drawing for me since I came straight from the chiropractor. Here's some sketches of the other usual suspects.

I borrowed Pedro's pen for these.

MoCCA sketches

When it's a bit slow, I like to sketch at the table. These are mostly people in the crowd with a few from my head scattered around.

There's a more extensive review of the festival here if you're interested in reading my long winded version.

watercolors from life

These were from class a few weeks back.

It's amazing how complicated a 5 minute pose gets when you're painting it. It is nice to break out of old drawing habits though.

MoCCA wrap up

A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to MoCCA this weekend! The unanimous verdict: The temperature in the armory was tolerable, I got to meet lots of awesome fans and creators, and it was our best MoCCA yet! I'll post a more extensive review on my LJ in a few days, but here's a few photos for now:

Crowd from our table on Saturday. We were across from the Double Fine guys and Lucy Knisley!

Alison(center), Erin and her husband visiting on Sunday.

A drawing I did for a self-proclaimed adventurous eater.

Some of the cool stuff I picked up! There was a definite French theme going on.

It's the final countdown!

Buttons for a new webcomic I'm starting about vegetarian cooking! Special thanks to my awesome friend Alison for the use of her button maker.

Here's some of the merch you can find at table D9 at MoCCA tomorrow and Sunday. Allan will have Things I've Seen at Shows 1 & 2, his portfolio and buttons too! Hope to see some of you there!

Also, Allan gave me an awesome (and way short) haircut last night:

MoCCA map and some drawings

Allan and I will be at MoCCA this Saturday and Sunday. (68 Lexington Ave, 11am-6pm)
We're at table D9 which you can find on the clickable map below:

I'm running surprisingly low on issue 1 and 2 of Urban Nomad, so this may be your last chance to grab a copy for a while!!

Here's a few more gestures from drawing last week.

If you're a woman interested in comics, you should come out tomorrow night to Drink and Draw Like a Lady at 192 Books. It's a great way to kick off MoCCA this weekend!

CA #3 Test print

I do a sketch and watercolor painting of the cover, which I apparently forgot to take photos of in process.

After scanning and getting all the pages cleaned up in Photoshop, I lay them out in Indesign. I did a test print on our Epson Printer to make sure there were no imperfections I missed in Photoshop.

The final testing stage is to see what my subjects think.

Moe gives it the paw of approval.

The cats think I've done them justice in this issue.

I send the digital Indesign files to Allan's friend Jon who prints them on nice paper and ships them back.

Counter Attack #3 process

Over the course of the year any time my cats did anything memorable, I'd scribble down a note or a sketch. I redrew a bunch of the poses to best get the idea across. I post them up on my cork board over my drafting table as reference.

Then I pencil a little mock-up book on regular computer paper to check my layout. I ended up changing the page order slightly so it flowed better.

I divide my Bristol board pages into sections of 6. I only use 3 pages of Bristol to draw my 16 page book because the final book is half size. (4.25 x 5.5)

After the pages are penciled, I ink them with a 0 brush and Koh-i-nohr Rapidograph ink.

I ink the text with a .08 Micron and erase my pencil lines.

Asifa drawings from 3-25-10

I resurrected a China marker this night. I haven't done life drawings with one since my SVA days.

MoCCA is next weekend, April 10th & 11th at the Lexington Ave Armory! I'll be doing an art post per day in anticipation, including some sneak peaks of Counter Attack 3 which will be premiering at the show!
