Dog Training For Kids Book!

Hello, sadly neglected blog. I've got some exciting news! The middle grade book I illustrated in roughly a month and a half is available starting Tuesday November 26th! The author Vanessa Estrada Marin is also from Queens and worked with the North Shore Animal League and my good friend L. Ryan Storms wrote an additional portion of the book.

Here's a direct link to the book at Penguin Random House's site, but it's available for pre-order on Amazon. It will also be at Barnes & Noble, Powell's, Hudson Booksellers, Target, Walmart and as an ebook. If you like it, positive reviews on Amazon and Goodreads are always helpful for authors!

I was obsessed with horses as a kid and spent an inordinate amount of time poring over the delightful drawings in "Happy Horsemanship" by Dorothy Henderson Pinch to convince my mom to let me take horseback riding lessons. I can only hope this book does for children who love dogs what that book did for me as a young reader. While working on this book, I also reminisced about my sister Kelly and her friend Devon taking dog training classes at the local kennel with their pups. I'm a proud aunt to three dogs: Luna, Aria and Auger. Though it's been a long time since I've had a dog of my own, according to my mom my first "words" were panting like our giant black dog Aspen. Drawing this book definitely scratched my dog itch, although I'm now following a problematic number of rescue sites on Instagram in the name of research.

Here's a look at one of my drawings from the initial rough sketch to final art. This was the first time I was using Procreate to draw on an iPad and I ended up doing most of the art in that program, only switching to Photoshop to compile everything and save the files as CMYK for final delivery. Thank you to Aimee Fleck at Penguin Random for the opportunity and her design input on this project!

Pete's Mini Zine Fest this Saturday July 13, 2019

After a few years away from one of my favorite local events, I'll be back at Pete's Mini Zine Fest this Saturday July 13th. It's free to attend! Come buy a drink, some mini comics and zines and hang out with local artists in this indoor/outdoor bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn from 2 pm to 7 pm.

Pete's Candy Store
709 Lorimer St.
Brooklyn, NY 11211
Saturday July 13th
2pm to 7pm

In addition to my usual auto-bio comics and vegetarian recipe fare, I'll have copies of my extra tiny zine about my childhood cat Bear. It'll be my first time selling it at a fest as it was previously part of Displaced Snail's Pet Zine project.

Underground Heroes: New York Transit in Comics

Several of my comic pages from Urban Nomad, including two issue covers, are included in the exhibit "Underground Heroes: New York Transit in Comics" at the New York Transit Museum. Located in a decommissioned subway station at 99 Schermerhorn St. in Brooklyn, the Transit Museum contains decades of subway cars complete with vintage advertising as well as station signage. This show contains an excellent collection of transit history in comics and I'm so thrilled to have my work included alongside artists like Roz Chast and Windsor McKay!

Print Mag has some great photos and insights with exhibit curator Jodi Shapiro. I also spoke briefly with the Brooklyn Paper shortly after the exhibit opened.

Here are a few photos from the opening reception in June 2018. The show has been extended through April 7, 2019 so there is still some time to check it out.

Red Envelope Show at Flushing Town Hall

It's the closing weekend of the Red Envelope Show at Flushing Town Hall. The closing party will be on Sunday January 11th from 3pm-5pm. The show pays homage to the red envelopes which are gifted by the Chinese community during the Lunar New Year. Each envelope was designed by local and international artists, community members, school children and retirees.

You can see my pieces (the Japanese Maple and Sugar Maple leaves on the bottom row in the first photo) and the rest of those still available for sale at the Grumpy Bert website. Part of the sale of each envelope go to Flushing Town Hall, my local arts center in Queens. My envelopes, and many of the others in the show, have a mystery gift inside!

Here are some photos from the opening party on January 5th. Happy Year of the Pig!
